The Czech Heritage Museum of Temple has been operating since January of 2023 under the direction of the SPJST Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2012 as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit corporation to support projects that celebrate the cherished traditions, customs, heritage and language of SPJST's forefathers. This is an obligation that the Foundation takes seriously and one that is helping to redefine the Museum as a community and regional rallying point with regularly scheduled activities, including exhibits, live performances, demonstrations and special events.
For more than a century, SPJST – and now through the SPJST Foundation -- has sought to preserve, celebrate, and pass forward the richness of Czech culture in Texas. The Czech Heritage Museum & Genealogy Center has long been a part of that mission— serving as a home to family treasures, historic artifacts, genealogical works, and the collective stories of generations. Since 2023, when the SPJST Foundation formally assumed direction of the Museum, the SPJST Foundation has been entrusted not only with safeguarding those memories, but with imagining what the next era of cultural stewardship should look like.
Across the state of Texas, we are blessed with not one . . . not two . . . but three major Czech cultural initiatives—each with its own personality, mission, and strengths. Here in Temple, the Czech Heritage Museum & Genealogy Center seeks to become a true hub of innovation in Czech‑Texan storytelling. We are embracing new ways to connect people with their ancestry—through expanded genealogy programming, digital resources, community partnerships, and fresh, engaging exhibits. We’re not just preserving history; we’re actively energizing it, making our museum a place where culture is not only remembered, but continually rediscovered and celebrated.
Meanwhile, over in La Grange, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center keeps expanding its extraordinary open-air Czech village. Their ongoing festivals and cultural programs bring our history to life in ways that are both authentic and wonderfully hands‑on. Meanwhile, the Czech Center Museum Houston continues to shine as one of the jewels of the city’s museum district—promoting Czech and Slovak heritage within the walls of a truly beautiful and world‑class facility.
Now, some people might ask, ‘Isn’t it unusual to have three Czech cultural institutions in one state?’ And I like to answer: Not at all. This is Texas. When we do culture, we do it big. Each of these institutions fills a unique role. We don’t compete—we complement one another.
Together, we create a statewide network of education, celebration, and preservation. Together, we tell a broader, richer story than any one of us could tell alone. And together, we ensure that Czech heritage in Texas doesn’t just survive—it flourishes.
A Moment of Transformation
When the SPJST Foundation launched the Night at the Museum series in 2023, the response exceeded anything we anticipated. The community’s enthusiasm affirmed something vital: people want meaningful cultural experiences—experiences that connect us, inspire us, and remind us who we are.
The Museum outgrown our current space at 119 West French Avenue, a building that was sold in the spring of 2026. But with change comes opportunity—an opportunity to reimagine our Museum from the ground up.
Our New Home and Our New Vision
The SPJST Foundation is moving forward to relocate the Museum within the SPJST Building at 520 North Main Street. This transition enables us to build:
a re‑envisioned, interactive museum experience,
a flexible theatre and art gallery,
an inviting entrance that reflects the vibrancy of Czech culture, and
expanded exhibition and community engagement spaces.
Together—with your input—we intend to create a living museum. Not a static repository, but a cultural engine: a place where heritage inspires creativity, where tradition meets imagination, and where people of all ages can learn, celebrate, and connect.
A Vision Strengthened by Partners
To bring this vision to life, the SPJST Foundation engaged Pillar Architecture Studio, supported by KPA Engineers and Covey Planning & Landscape Architecture. Their thoughtful, community‑minded design philosophy and deep connection to Temple make them the ideal partners. Their work includes 3D modeling, schematic planning, exhibit concepts, theatre design, lobby enhancements, and exterior improvements.
Connecting Our Work to a Larger Idea
The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center was founded on a bold an enduring idea: to preserve the culture, the memories and the proud history of Texans of Czech ancestry. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer forefathers and mothers who settled Texas.
Credit goes to past SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris for his work in staring the SPJST Library collection and to Otto Hanus for his diligence as the Museum’s first curator. The lion’s share of thanks for the collection goes to SPJST members and friends of the Society who have donated the thousands of artifacts and volumes that comprise the Museum’s archives.
When Rice University opened its doors in 1912, it set out to be a university that would serve as a home for both discovery and creativity, a place where innovation and imagination would grow together. That idea – to create a Museum that will serve as a home for both discovery and creativity -- resonates deeply with what we are building here.
Much like Rice’s commitment to integrating the arts into the entire life of its university, we at SPJST have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to create a museum that is not merely a place to look back, but a place that helps shape the future:
A place where our Czech heritage doesn’t just live in display cases, but comes alive through music, performance, storytelling, research, and community activity.
A place where history and creativity work hand‑in‑hand.
A place that strengthens Temple’s cultural landscape and becomes a catalyst for connection, learning, and pride—just as Rice’s museum’s energize their campus and city.
Their example affirms what we already know: when you invest in arts and humanities, you invest in people. You invest in identity. You invest in imagination. And you make your community more vibrant, and more deeply connected.
