Traditional Czech Kroj

The kroj (Czech folk costume) is a beautiful and significant representation of Czech heritage, worn with pride during festivals, celebrations, and other important events. Each region in the Czech lands has its own distinct variations of the kroj, with specific colors, fabrics, and accessories symbolizing different aspects of local culture and history.

In this exhibit, we are showcasing both male and female kroj outfits, each beautifully crafted with intricate embroidery and traditional elements. Notably, the boots worn by the female mannequin are part of Miss Ann Hornak's collection of Czechoslovakian folk items. These boots were previously displayed at the Central Library in McKinney, Texas. Miss Hornak shared that they were worn by Czech women as part of their kroj ensembles, adding to the authenticity and charm of this exhibit.

Each piece on display tells a story of Czech pride and tradition, with the kroj serving as a living testament to the cultural richness passed down through generations.

The Magic Gambler

The Magic Gambler is a fascinating piece of history—a French-made automaton dating back to the early 1880s. During this time, French watchmakers were renowned for crafting intricate automatons, blending artistry with mechanical innovation.

This particular automaton is unique in that it was used to determine who would pay for the beer in social settings. By "rolling" the dice, the Magic Gambler added an element of chance and fun to gatherings, making it an entertaining tradition at the time. It served as a playful tool for deciding who would foot the bill for the round, giving people a bit of excitement and unpredictability with each roll.
