When the Dragon Gets a Headache is a fairy tale suited for children, but it will be interesting to adults as well for several reasons. The film addresses the dual cultures of Czech and Slovak. There is a two-headed dragon which speaks Czech with one of its heads and Slovak with the other. There are also two neighboring kingdoms that are peaceable with each other but cursed so that they cannot join.
The leading roles in the film are played by Slovak actress Kamila Magalova and Czech singer Karel Gott. The film was released in 2018.
Karel Gott passed away in October of 2019 and was mourned by the entire country. Gott trained as an opera singer but also gained fame as a pop singer. It is said that his voice did not diminish with age even in the high octaves. He was voted the country’s best male singer 42 times. He recently recorded a touching duet with his 13-year-old daughter, Charlotte Ella titled “Srdce Nehasnou” or “Hearts do not go out,” which is available on YouTube.
The regional costumes, or kroje, featured in the film, are typical of the Moravian Wallachia region of the Czech Republic. This area, in the Beskydy mountains and due north of Vienna, is where the majority of those Czechs who settled Texas lands originated. The unique feature of this costume is the modrotisk (blue pattern) skirt.
